MIDDLETOWN MEETING MATTERS

Middletown Town Council

When: Monday night.

Where: Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road.

Absent: Councilman Dennis Turano.

Of note, the council:

  • Unanimously approved a new four-year concessions contract at Sachuest Beach with Salty’s, with a fifth-year option. As part of the deal, Salty’s will sell apparel at the stand for the first time, with the Town of Middletown receiving 10 percent of all those clothing transactions. The beaches are scheduled to open officially on May 29, with parking stickers available at https://mdl.town/BeachStickers online.
  • Unanimously approved a special event permit from the Middletown High School Parent Teacher Group for the Senior 2021 Beach Bonfire Social with food trucks at Sachuest Beach on June 10 from 6-9 p.m. at the Sachuest Point Road summertime hotspot.
  • Unanimously approved a special event permit for an Ocean State Artisans Summer Fair on June 26 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Linden Park at 141 West Main Road. Organizer Beth Giguere said the park would remain open for public use during the event, which was expected to draw about 1,000 people. “It’s nice you want to have the event in your own town,” council President Paul M. Rodrigues said. “I think that’s great.”
  • Unanimously approved changes to the town’s height and yard ordinances to make sure they’re in line with state regulations, amendments that Town Solicitor Peter B. Regan said were “housekeeping” in nature.
  • Heard from Center Avenue resident Kathy Silveira about a lack of communication from National Grid with ongoing work in the Easton’s Point area. Silveira said she and other neighbors were getting frustrated by the unpredictable nature of the project and the interruptions it’s been causing. “They need to put in a little more effort in, especially when we’re hearing complaints,” council Vice President Thomas P. Welch III said, referring to National Grid’s outreach efforts.

Next meeting: First public hearing on the proposed Fiscal 2022 budget on Wednesday, May 19 at 6 p.m.
