Middletown resident Andrea Dwyer was on target with her answer, noting this week's "Where Am I?" photo was taken by Coddington Highway and West Main Road, one of the busiest intersections on Aquidneck Island. According to the most recent state Department of Transportation counts, more than 52,000 vehicles travel through the area a day.
Town Engineer Warren Hall said the concrete marker actually serves a real useful purpose and isn't just a decoration. Known officially as a "concrete bound," Hall said the RIHB initials stand for "Rhode Island Highway Bound." Hall said the bounds are placed along state highways to designate those roads from private properties. The hole in the middle of the bound is used to help with surveying work.
So, that's it for "Where Am I?" No. 1. Again, thanks to Andrea for her quick work. Keep an eye out at MiddletownRI.com and the Town's social media channels for future installments of "Where Am I?"
