NEW SENIOR CENTER THRIFT STORE WINNING FANS, CUSTOMERS

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (DECEMBER 13, 2022) – These days, it seems like everyone is trying to stretch each dollar a little further.

That’s no different at the Middletown Senior Center, where a new thrift store was opened recently stocking everything from jewelry and clothing to puzzles, games, home goods and so much more.

Senior Center Director Arleen Kaull said she’s heard nothing but positives from those who’ve visited the new spot, which occupies three first-floor classrooms in the old Peckham School at 600 Green End Ave.

The store staffed by volunteers is  generally is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 am-3 pm.

“It’s been great so far,” Kaull said. “I can’t say enough for the energy and excitement this has brought to the senior center (which is next door to the thrift shop). Everyone raves about the selection and quality of the merchandise and it’s good to know that all the money we raise helps our senior population.”

During a recent tour of the store, there was a wide selection of items in every area. For example, dozens of necklaces hung on one classroom wall, with other items set up on tables nearby.

A closet in the same room was stocked with all variety of puzzles, which were priced at 50 cents each or three for $1.

A review of the other merchandise saw everything reasonably priced, from chairs to a bunch of sized 6 Italian leather pants in pink, green and other colors.

“We’re trying to make sure our customers get good deals and we don’t want any of our merchandise to stay around too long,” Kaull said. “The way we look at it, no fair offer will be refused.”

Most importantly, each dollar raised goes back into the senior center, which serves hundreds of clients every month with an array of offerings.

“When people come here and see what we’re all about, I think they’re really surprised,” Kaull said. “We like to keep our senior population active and moving and this new store is another opportunity for that and the best part is to see all the smiles.”
