MIDDLETOWN MEETING MATTERS
MIDDLETOWN TOWN COUNCIL
When: Monday night
Where: Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road
Absent: None
Of note:
- Learned paving and sidewalk work on upper Aquidneck Avenue was expected to start overnights in June, with the project expected to wrap up in October. A state Department of Transportation official said they were doing the best they could, but work got delayed in the availability of project materials. Council President Paul M. Rodrigues said in addition to getting the project done right, the No. 1 priority was to make sure the road was passable for motorists and pedestrians alike.
- Held moments of silence for Peter Turano and Joseph Burns, Middletown residents who passed away recently after making significant contributions to the community over the years. Turano — the father of Councilman Dennis Turano — was a longtime dean and coach for the schools, with Burns a former fire chief in the early 1980s.
- Approved a resolution marking April as the “Month of the Military Child.” Superintendent Rosemarie K. Kraeger thanked the council for its work on behalf of the Navy and other armed forces, saying Middletown is the most highly impacted school district in Rhode Island, with close to 30 percent of the students in local schools from military families.
- Set aside $3,000 from the council discretionary fund for the Middletown High Senior Sports Event at the request of John Ceglarski, president of the Middletown Athletic Boosters organization. Speaking for his colleagues, Turano told Ceglarski “I appreciate all your work, the whole team.”
- Named Steven Cabral of Crossman Engineering as town engineer following the recent retirement of Warren Hall. Cabral has served as interim town engineer while Hall was absent previously.
Next meeting: Monday, May 1 at 6:30 pm in Town Hall.
