MIDDLETOWN MEETING MATTERS
MIDDLETOWN TOWN COUNCIL
When: Monday night.
Where: Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road.
Absent: Dennis Turano.
Of note:
- Honored Middletown High seniors Caitlin Brett and Aleksandr Kobrynich for their service to the town’s Middletown Prevention Coalition.
- Held a moment of silence for Susan Lee Randall, the sister of council President Paul M. Rodrigues. In comments to the council, Vice President Thomas Welch said Randall was well known and well respected in the community and she was gone far too soon.
- Heard a request from Easton’s Point Association President Michael Flynn for an ordinance to put a cap of three short-term rentals per lot, something he said would codify the town’s existing practice with such properties. Council members asked town legal counsel to review the concept as well as limits on the expansion of current short-term rentals and report back at a future meeting. “I’m not sure there’s any one ordinance that’s going to solve the issue,” Rodrigues said.
- Allocated $650 from the council president’s discretionary fund to support the town’s Summer Basketball League, a request from high school basketball coach Kevin Lendrum.
- Agreed to look into drainage issues by the roadway near St. Columba’s Church and see if a workable solution could be struck and taken care of in short order.
- Unanimously approved a request from Welch to ask the General Assembly to withdraw pending legislation to give Rhode Island Energy wide latitude to remove problematic trees and vegetation across the state. Welch said the City of Newport previously okayed a similar resolution.
Next meeting: Tuesday, June 20, 2023 at 6:30 p.m. in Town Hall.
