FISCAL 2024 BUDGET SCHEDULE CRYSTALIZING
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (AUGUST 2, 2023) – Middletown’s Fiscal 2024 budget picture is getting clearer.
On Monday, Aug. 21, the Town Council is slated to sit down and discuss the proposed $84.1 million figure immediately following an executive session in Town Hall, 350 East Main Road. The executive session is scheduled to start at 5:30 pm in the council chambers.
After the budget conversation, the council is expected to adopt a budget for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, which oversees everything from how much is allocated to road repairs and the schools to the beaches, police and fire protection and other government operations.
Last Monday, the council approved a measure to extend the Fiscal 2023 budget through the end of this month. Typically, the Middletown fiscal year starts on July 1. But because the council has not approved a new budget yet, the move Monday was required per order of the Town Charter, one of the documents that guides the town.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience while we’ve worked through the budget process this year,” Town Administrator Shawn J. Brown said. “It’s important that we do it right and the council has insisted on making sure the numbers are right and reflect our needs without overburdening our taxpayers.”
Should the council adopt totals at the Aug. 21 meeting — a continuation of the second public hearing on the budget — tax bills are expected to be mailed in early September.
