MIDDLETOWN MEETING MATTERS
MIDDLETOWN TOWN COUNCIL
When: Monday night.
Where: Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road.
Absent: Councilman Christopher Logan.
Of note:
- Asked legal counsel to prepare a draft ordinance for future consideration requiring short-term rentals be owner occupied with a maximum of four guests only. The move came following a lengthy discussion on the item at the request of council President Paul M. Rodrigues, who said the issue doesn’t seem to be getting better based on his experiences and what he’s heard from other residents. Councilman Dennis Turano and Town Solicitor Peter Regan recused themselves from the discussion.
- Learned of an ongoing discussion between the town and Newport County YMCA about the potential construction of six pickleball courts at John Clarke Park on John Clarke Road through a potential public-private partnership. Town Administrator Shawn J. Brown said nothing has been finalized, but if the project comes together, it could help address some demand for pickleball courts in the community.
- Approved the creation of a local 250th Commission at the request of the Rhode Island Secretary of State to promote Rhode Island's unique role in the American Revolution, increase civic engagement and stimulate the local economy through tourism opportunities. In Middletown, the volunteer will have one council member, two members of the Middletown Historical Society and two residents, which will be advertised soon.
Next meeting: Monday, Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. in Town Hall.
