EARTH DAY ART CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Middletown Public Library Hosting Art Show By Local Students
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (MAY 15, 2024) – The Town of Middletown sponsored its first annual Earth Day Art Contest to promote the beauty of Middletown and celebrate nature.
The contest, open to Middletown students
(K-12), features depictions of various Earth Day themes such as preserving trees, keeping waterways clean, protecting natural habitats and conservation of the earth’s resources.
Student submissions were judged in three separate age categories: grades K-4, grades 5-8, and grades 9-12.
At the elementary level, there was a tie: Isabelle Ringdahl, age 6, and her sister Lily, age 8, each provided illustrations of flowers, highlighting the importance of creating a healthy habitat for pollinators around the world. The two girls are in kindergarten and second grade at Aquidneck School.
For the middle school submissions, Emma Kirton’s drawing of “More Earth/Less Trash” depicts the need to clean up around the globe, highlighting Middletown as the place to start. Emma is a seventh grader at Gaudet Middle School.
Several high school students offered their take on the natural beauty of Middletown, featuring photographs and acrylic paintings of the Sachuest Beach and the wetlands near Hanging Rock.
Lila Christy’s painting of Surfer’s End was chosen as the winner at the high school level. Lila is in tenth grade at Middletown High School.
All artwork submitted will be displayed at Middletown Public Library Meeting Room from now through Saturday, May 25, during the library’s regular hours.
Held in conjunction with the Governor Dan McKee’s Keep Rhody Litter Free campaign, this art contest seeks to raise awareness of everyone’s responsibility to preserve natural resources and to commit to cleaning up litter on public property and open spaces.
