MIDDLETOWN MEETING MATTERS
MIDDLETOWN TOWN COUNCIL
When: Monday night
Where: Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road
Absent: Dennis Turano
Of note:
- Held moments of silence for residents for former Zoning Board of Review member Andy Bacon and Newport Electric employee Billy Flowers, who passed away recently. Council President Paul Rodrigues said both men contributed mightily to the community and they would be missed.
- In response from audience concerns, town engineering staff was asked to review plans from the Rhode Island Airport Corp. for clearing about 13 acres at the end runways for the Newport State Airport. RIAC staff said the project was not for the expansion of runways and all the work was proposed on state land.
- Approved a holiday sales license application from HomeGoods in the former Bed Bath & Beyond location at 288 East Main Road next to Marshalls.
- Okayed a victualing house license for Becky’s BBQ at 82 East Main Road, subject to all the required local and state permits. Rodrigues and other council members thanked the permit holders, saying they were excited about the re-opening of the well loved local barbecue spot across from Aquidneck Centre shopping facility.
- Heard a report from Finance Director Marc Tanguay about the overall health and strength of the town and school finances, with all town accounts showing positive gains. To view the report, https://www.middletownri.com/DocumentCenter/View/12696/240520_31 online.
Next meeting: Monday, June 3 at 6:30 p.m. in Town Hall.
