MIDDLETOWN MEETING MATTERS
MIDDLETOWN TOWN COUNCIL — JUNE 3, 2024
When: Monday night
Where: Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road
Absent: Emily Tessier
Of note, the council:
- Learned funding requests for affordable housing next to the Middletown Senior Center and 26 Oliphant Lane were not approved by the state. Town Administrator Shawn J. Brown said he would be meeting in coming days to learn more about where the application fell short, but based on what he’s heard, there weren’t enough units included to make it competitive against other projects in the state. Despite the recent news, Brown said Middletown would continue its efforts to bring more affordable housing to the community.
- Received word a request from the state for funding was not successful for new pickleball courts on John Clarke Road across from the corporate headquarters for BankNewport. Brown said the town would continue its efforts to seek non tax dollars to pay for the new courts.
- Was briefed the town and schools would look for ways to combine facilities management services with the pending departure of School Director of Facilities Poe George. Recently, the schools and town finance offices merged to provide better management and oversight of those operations, sparking the discussion about facilities and other areas where duplication could be reduced or eliminated.
- Reserved the following dates for the summer meeting schedule: June 17, July 1, July 15 and Aug. 5.
Next meeting: Monday, June 17 at 6:30 p.m. in Town Hall.
