#MiddletownRI High Guidance Counselor Christine Clancey is honored as "Teacher of the Year" by the Town Council Monday night for her work for the children -- and community.

CLANCEY HONORED FOR COMMITMENT
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (OCTOBER 7, 2024) – Christine Clancey was recognized Monday night by the Town Council as one of Middletown’s outstanding educators.
During a packed session in Town Hall, the longtime Middletown teacher was applauded loudly for her contributions to Middletown High — and the entire community.
Clancey, a guidance counselor at the Valley Road high school, was named in September as the 2024 “Teacher of the Year” by the Middletown School Committee. She started working in Middletown as a math teacher in 2000.
Standing in front of the council dais, council President Paul Rodrigues and Vice President Thomas Welch III presented Clancey a citation, town tile and town clock. Then, the entire audience stood and clapped for Clancey and her fellow educators.
“Thank you to the Town Council for honoring me here tonight,” Clancey said. “This is a tremendous honor that I received this past year, becoming Middletown ‘Teacher of the Year.’ As was mentioned, I am a Middletown alum. I’ve been teaching in Middletown, this is my 25th year. I am truly honored.”
Rodrigues complimented Clancey and her colleagues, saying they’re the ones who make a true difference everyday in Middletown’s schools.
“We thank you, Christine,” Rodrigues said. “You’re in the trenches everyday…It’s teachers like yourself that have an impact on the students for the rest of their lives.”
Whether it’s organizing “Career Day” or countless other student centered events at Middletown High or providing an ear to anyone having a bad day, Clancey is known as one of the lynchpins of the school. Her husband Michael is a social studies at the school.
A 1996 graduate from Middletown High, Clancey was inducted into the Middletown High School athletic Hall of Fame in 2023 for her excellence in girl’s basketball.
Previously, Superintendent Billy Niemeyer thanked Clancey for her diligence and constant commitment to the students and staff.
“Christine has been a role model for students throughout the years,” Niemeyer said. “She’s a key factor in her students’ success,” Niemeyer said. “Christine is truly dedicated to the students of Middletown.”
Speaking for the school’s student body, senior Landon Resendes agreed.
“Certainly, it could not be more well-deserved,” said Landon, the Student Representative to the School Committee. “She has been a critical asset to student success.”
