MIDDLETOWN POLICE DEPARTMENT AWARDED CALEA REACCREDITATION
MIDDLETOWN, R.I., On Thursday, July 15, 2021 Chief William Kewer, appeared virtually before a committee from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
The committee interviewed Chief Kewer regarding the department’s reaccreditation application for Advanced Accreditation through CALEA. Chief Kewer answered numerous questions regarding the department’s assessment report and inspection conducted in April 2021. After an extensive interview process and a full review of the April 2021 Assessment Report, the committee voted to recommend Advanced Accreditation to the full CALEA Commission for final approval.
At the conclusion of the virtual interview, a unanimous vote by the Commission awarded the Middletown Police Department the prestigious status of “CALEA Advanced Accreditation”. This is the third time that the department has achieved advanced accreditation.
Accreditation is an elective process for any law enforcement agency, but less than 5% of law enforcement agencies nationwide are accredited. The CALEA Law Enforcement Advanced Accreditation Program is comprised of 484 standards that departments must meet to ensure they are implementing nationally recognized best practices in law enforcement. The Middletown Police Department is now one of eleven Nationally Accredited Law Enforcement Agencies within the State of Rhode Island, and one of seven to achieve Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation.
The reaccreditation of the Middletown Police Department follows four years of work completed by police and civilian personnel to ensure the department's standard operating procedures, policies and actions are consistent with CALEA national standards.
The awarding of National Accreditation is a testament to the professionalism and dedication to duty of the men and women of the Middletown Police Department as well as the support of Town Officials and the citizens of Middletown.
