CARD ART WINNERS BRING HOLIDAY CHEER
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (DECEMBER 19, 2024) – The winners of the fifth annual Middletown Holiday Card Art Contest have been announced.
During a ceremony Wednesday afternoon in Town Hall, Gaudet Middle School seventh grader Kal Stevens and Aquidneck School third graders Stella Meyer and Owen Palumbo were honored for their beautiful, unique card designs.
Their artwork was picked from a collection of more than a dozen submissions around Thanksgiving that best depicted “Middletown Winter Activities,” the theme of this year’s contest.
Each won a $25 gift card from the town along with a framed print of their artwork and 12 blank holiday cards.
The town uses the designs to decorate the community’s holiday cards sent out every year to employees, volunteers, officials and others who help make Middletown a great place to live, work and play.
“This is one of my favorite events that we hold every year,” said Town Councilor Peter Connerton, who served as master of ceremonies. “It’s fun to meet the winners and honor their work. It’s something I look forward to every year and I always come away impressed with the designs and the pride they feel for Middletown. It’s truly a special place.”
Kal’s “Nature Inspired Holiday Tree” design was as colorful and vibrant as it was eye-catching, depicting pine needles and holly berries on a fall leaf backdrop.
Stella’s “Prescott Farm Windmill and Guard House” showed a smiling, happy person and their equally upbeat pooch visiting the historic West Main Road location in the winter, complete with a snowman and plenty of holiday cheer.
Owen’s “Surfing Snowman” visited another popular Middletown locale, as a snowman caught some waves at Surfer’s End by Purgatory Road, with Purgatory Chasm, St. George’s School and lush vegetation featured prominently as well.
Thanking his administrative assistant Maureen Maurer for her work putting together another successful card art contest, Brown said he can’t wait to see every submission.
“This is a great way to honor and inspire our local art community and also recognize the efforts of our employees, officials, volunteers and others who help us make Middletown what it is today,” Brown said. “I take a lot of pride in every card design that’s submitted and we all look forward to selecting the cards that represent Middletown. They’re special.”
“I love that something special about Middletown was captured in every card,” Superintendent Billy Niemeyer added. “They’re all great and do a great job representing Middletown and what we’re all about here as a community."
