The #MiddletownRI Town Council covered a lot of ground Monday night, including offering condolences to Town Administrator Shawn J. Brown for the recent loss of his mother and naming two members to the Planning Board.

MIDDLETOWN MEETING MATTERS
MIDDLETOWN TOWN COUNCIL
When: Monday evening, Jan. 27, 2025.
Where: Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road.
Absent: Vice President Thomas Welch III.
Of Note:
- Held a moment of silence for Arleen Brown, the mother of Town Administrator Shawn J. Brown, who passed away recently. Council President Paul Rodrigues expressed condolences on behalf of the town, saying Brown did everything possible — and more — to make sure his mother’s later years were as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. “You took excellent care of your mother,” Rodrigues said. "Family always comes first, no matter what.”
- Announced Shared Facilities Director Ed Collins would be starting his first day with the town on Feb. 3. Rodrigues and Brown said Collins would be an asset to the new middle-high school and library relocation projects as much of the day-to-day operations of all town and school buildings and grounds.
- Named Paul Croce and Charlie Vaillancourt to the Planning Board, with the third vacancy up for consideration at the council’s next meeting.
- Heard from Police Chief Jason Ryan about revisiting the idea of putting speed humps into the Bliss Mine Road area after traffic counts were taken during Summer 2025. Councilor Charlie Roberts asked for a town-wide review of traffic and speeds on local streets, something Brown said he would meet with Ryan and Town Engineer John Mello to discuss and bring back to the council. “I just don’t want to keep chasing the problem,” Roberts said.
Next Meeting: Monday, Feb. 3, 2025 at 6:30 pm in Town Hall.
