MIDDLETOWN MEETING MATTERS
MIDDLETOWN TOWN COUNCIL
When: Tuesday evening, Feb. 18, 2025.
Where: Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road.
Absent: None.
Of Note:
- Promoted Cliff McGregor to deputy chief of the Middletown Police Department. McGregor most recently served as lieutenant of Middletown Police and is taking over as the department’s second in command from Jason Ryan, who was promoted late last year to Chief. Council members applauded McGregor for his hard work and commitment to the department and community and wished him well.
- Named Stephen Huttler to the Planning Board following a lengthy interview, including close to 10 questions. Huttler has served on the town’s Zoning Board of Review, is a Middletown High alum and retired international lawyer, including a strong background in real estate he said would assist with his work on the volunteer group.
- Passed amendments to the town’s zoning ordinances to make it easier to develop accessory use dwelling units in town, an item that’s been pushed by the General Assembly to create more affordable housing across the state. There were no comments from the public on the amendments and the council adopted each unanimously.
- Signed off unanimously on the rules of the council along with a streamlined system to make committee appointments.
- Approved licenses for Mindy’s Galley at 72 East Main Road, similar to Mindy’s Restaurant in Portsmouth that serves Asian fare and sushi.
- Okayed a special event permit from the Newport County YMCA for the 2nd Annual Charlie Holder, Sr. Memorial 5K Road Race Walk/Run on May 17 from 7:45-10:45 am. Newport Mayor Charlie Holder thanked the council for its support, saying the first year’s race raised more than $17,000 and organizers hoped to surpass that total this year.
- Endorsed a special event permit for the Amica Newport Marathon on Oct. 12 from 7:30 am-1:30 pm.
Next Meeting: Monday, March 3, 2025 at 6:30 pm in Town Hall.
