A #MiddletownRI Fire team takes first place in the “Fight For Air Climb” fundraiser by the American Lung Association, the second straight year winning the top spot against other departments across Rhode Island. Thanks for all you do for our town.
MIDDLETOWN FIREFIGHTERS WIN TOP HONORS
MIDDLETOWN, RI (MAY 28, 2025) – Middletown Fire is again tops in Rhode Island in the “Fight For Air Climb” sponsored by the American Lung Association.
A team with the local department recently won first place honors in the contest racing up 22 stories in a Providence hotel, besting squads made up of firefighters from the state.
Firefighters Jacob Francis, Ben Godek, Brennan Martin and Gunnar Rinkel as well as Lt. Kevin Mancini were part of the Middletown Fire team.
The Middletown Fire Local 1933 Union made an announcement Wednesday about the award. The Middletown Fire Local 1933 squad also won statewide “Fastest Firefighter Team” honors in 2024.
“This is a real source of pride for not only the Local 1933 team, but the entire department,” Fire Chief Robert McCall said. “We talk about our commitment to the community and the hard work we put in and this is one way we’re showing it. This was an awesome day for Middletown Fire.”
McCall said the Middletown team took on a number of other departments last month as part of the American Lung Association fundraiser.
Each firefighter had to wear full turnout gear while climbing up the stairs as quickly as possible, which McCall noted is an incredible test of strength and endurance.
“One of the unique things about being a firefighter is how the job tests all your skills,” McCall said. “One moment, you’re charging up the stairs in full turnout gear, the next you’re helping an elderly patient who needs assistance and then cutting open a car that’s been in an accident. Each is a unique situation and requires that we’re at our best. There’s really no job that’s quite like it.”
