MIDDLETOWN MEETING MATTERS
MIDDLETOWN TOWN COUNCIL
When: Monday, June 2, 2025
Where: Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road
Absent: Councilor Dennis Turano
Of Note:
- Accepted the Recommendation To Award for several subcontracts for the construction of the new Middletown Middle High School. This included everything from masonry, drywall, surveying to concrete, structural steel, applied fireproofing and more. Site mobilization for the project started earlier Monday and the effort remains “on time and on budget.” Everyone was also invited to attend the June 9 groundbreaking community celebration at 10 am for the new building at 259 Turner Road.
- Approved a proposal to set aside $127,000 in local Tax Incremental Financing money for Rhode Island Energy to do engineering, design and planning work to underground utilities in the lower Aquidneck Avenue. Town officials said the report was expected to take about eight months to complete and would give the community a complete picture of the costs and timeline of doing the undergrounding project, which has been discussed to help improve the look and feel of the beachfront area. In general, local leaders spoke in favor of the project, but said the $30 million - $40 million projected price tag would be difficult to cover. With the vote, the council said it was not committing any additional dollars to the effort at this point.
- Voted to advertise proposed amendments to the town’s zoning regulations to make it easier to develop multi-family dwellings on smaller lots in town. The item will have to come back to the council for review and public hearings, where residents and businesspeople will have an opportunity to offer feedback.
- Approved a special event permit for the “Summer Concert Series” at Paradise Valley Park on July 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 6-8 pm held by the Middletown Outreach Department.
- Approved a special event permit for “Middletown Family Day” on October. 11 from 4-8 pm at Second Beach by the Middletown Prevention Coalition.
- Approved a special event permit for the “Molar Express” by East Bay Community Action Program on July 17 and 18 at 8 am-5 pm from Middletown Public Library and July 23 and 29 at 8 am-5 pm at Linden Park. Council members said the event was an important one for the community and provided free dental care to eligible visitors.
Next Meeting: Monday, June 16 at 6:30 pm in Town Hall
