#MiddletownRI Police, lifeguard staff and the harbor master continue to monitor an unconfirmed shark sighting Wednesday about 1 pm around 70 yards off shore at Third Beach.

UNCONFIRMED SHARK SIGHTING AT THIRD BEACH
MIDDLETOWN, RI (JULY 23, 2025) – On July 23 at about 1 pm, there was a report from a camp counselor standing in the Third Beach area about a fin in the water about 70 yards offshore.
Immediately, swimmers were pulled out of the water out of an abundance of caution while lifeguards, Middletown Police and the town’s harbormaster investigated. There were approximately 60 people on the town owned portion of the beach at the time.
That investigation continues, but the harbormaster on patrol in the waters off Third Beach and lifeguards saw no evidence of a fin or shark.
While swimmers are being allowed back in the water, they’re also being notified about the incident.
“From what we’re seeing and hearing, this is an unconfirmed sighting and there was no immediate threat to any swimmer, but we wanted to make sure we took every precaution,” said Will Cronin, who oversees beach operations for the town. “Everyone responded exactly how they should and beach patrons have been really good when we’ve told them about it. I’d also like to personally thank the staff and the Middletown Police Department for their quick and appropriate response.”
Any updates about this matter will be posted at MiddletownRI.gov and the town’s social media channels.
