The #MiddletownRI Town Council held its second regular meeting in October and dealt with an array of issues from a moment of silence for a local couple to awarding a contract to do deck work at the pavilion at Second Beach.
MIDDLETOWN MEETING MATTERS
MIDDLETOWN TOWN COUNCIL
When: Monday night, Oct. 20, 2025
Where: Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road
Absent: None
Of Note:
- Held a moment of silence for Thomas and Agatha Kirby, who died in an Oct. 13 plane crash in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Council President Paul Rodrigues said the couple’s loss was significant for Middletown and he commended the Kirbys for their work and heart, saying they “were a huge asset to our community.”
- Conducted the first reading on a proposed ordinance requiring horses to wear waste bags when walking on town streets and public places. The Beach Commission requested the amendment to help limit environmental pollution from horses, reducing the impact of the quality of life of pedestrians and bicyclists and related concerns. There was no comment from the audience and the second hearing is expected at the council’s next meeting.
- Unanimously referred proposed amendments to the town’s ordinances on multifamily structures back to the Planning Board for additional consideration. Town officials said the goal was to grow the amount of housing stock in the community and there were about 120 eligible properties. To view the amendments, visit https://www.middletownri.gov/DocumentCenter/View/21202/Multifamily-Ordinance-Proposal online.
- Got an update on work to manage the local coyote population, which showed the number of overall complaints has been diminishing in recent months.
- Awarded a $277,713 contract to EW Burman Inc. for the expansion of the pavilion deck at Second Beach, with money for the project coming from the town’s beach fund.
Next Regular Meeting: Monday, Nov. 3 at 6:30 pm in Town Hall.
