MIDDLETOWN POLICE OFFICERS WIN DUI, SAFETY AWARDS
MIDDLETOWN, RI (OCTOBER 29, 2025) – Several Middletown Police Officers were recognized recently for their work to keep our streets safe.
According to the department, Patrol Officers Thomas Cullen, Mitchell Lopes and Alfredo Lorenzo were honored by the Rhode Island chapter of the American Automobile Association (AAA) for their proactive work and effective driving under the influence enforcement over the past year.
Cullen earned an unprecedented hat trick of DUI awards. Those included the NHTSA Impaired Driving and Speed Enforcement Champion Award, the MADD DUI Achievement Award and the AAA Traffic Safety Hero Award.
Lopes received the MADD DUI Achievement Award and the AAA Traffic Safety Hero Award.
Lorenzo won the AAA Traffic Safety Award.
Chief Jason Ryan sent word recently to the entire department and others, expressing pride and support for the trio’s efforts.
Always a top priority for Middletown Police, officers have redoubled their work to slow speeds on area roads.
Ryan has said the goal is to make Middletown as safe as possible for everyone going from Point A to Point B, whether it’s in a car, walking or riding a bicycle.
This week, the department and town rolled out a new school zone safety camera program on Purgatory, Reservoir and Turner roads to slow speeding by St. George’s, Aquidneck and Forest Avenue schools.
Warnings will be issued to those speeding through each area during school hours until Nov. 26, when enforcement begins. To learn more about the program, visit https://mdl.town/MPD online.
“I want to personally thank Officers Cullen, Lopes and Lorenzo for their work to make our streets and roads safer for everyone,” Ryan said. “It’s a top priority for the department and our community and we hope everyone gets the message that Middletown is serious about driving under the influence, speeding and other issues on our roads.”
