MIDDLETOWN FIRE PROMOTIONS, HIRES CELEBRATED
MIDDLETOWN, RI (DECEMBER 3, 2025) – It was a night of celebration and thanks for Middletown Fire.
During a well-attended ceremony Monday night in Town Hall, the department announced the promotion of several longtime firefighters and recognized several newcomers beginning their careers with the Wyatt Road force.
Leading the list, Bill Homer was sworn in as the department’s newest Battalion Chief. A member of the department since October 2007, Homer is well known and respected for his work ethic, sense of humor and willingness to pitch in whenever necessary to get the job done.
Nate McGillivray was sworn in as a captain after most recently serving as lieutenant. Working for Middletown Fire since October 2006, McGillivray was commended for leading from the front and pushing everyone around him to do better.
Conner Gunning was sworn in as a lieutenant. Praised for raising the department’s EMS program, Gunning was recognized for his maturity and sense of calm he brings to firefighting, with his father a retired deputy from the Newport Fire Department.
“Nights like this matter,” Chief Robert McCall said. “They remind us why we show up every day, why we train hard and why we hold each other to a high standard. We are here to recognize members of this department who have stepped forward, taken on more responsibility and earned the trust of this organization.”
New Firefighters Zach Reed and Henry Ciannavei and Probationary Firefighters Matt Hook and Cam Neary were also honored and welcomed to the department.
“Promotions and new hires are not just personnel moves,” the chief continued. “They are investments in the future of this department. They are a sign that our mission continues, our standards stay strong and our commitment to this community is steady.
“To those promoted tonight, congratulations. You earned this. To our newest firefighters, welcome. You are part of something bigger now. Take it seriously, take pride in it and take care of each other.”
