While it might not be the most attractive structure ever built, the concession stand at Second Beach has weathered the test of time in less than ideal conditions.
Summer after summer, residents and people from across the globe visit Second Beach.
The natural beauty of the place, soft sands, clean waters and welcoming, family vibe are among the reasons why the Sachuest Point Road beach remains so popular.
This month's "Where Am I?" was taken of a stairway and part of the building, which has a unique rough texture to help it weather the elements.
Local resident Michael Rodrigues was the first person to submit the correct answer to this month's "Where Am I?" and he gets a big shoutout from the Town. Rodrigues said he recognized the building immediately after working at the beach for five years when he was younger.
"I have so many things I enjoy about Second Beach as a previous employee, but also as a beach patron," Rodrigues said. "Probably the best thing for me is how clean and friendly the environment is there."
During the beach season, the operation is served by the squat concrete building just off the main parking lot of Second Beach. Built in 1974, the structure might not might be the most beloved in town, but it's stood the test of time in a less than ideal environment, pounded by sand, water, salt and the like. Featuring a concession stand, restrooms, office space, showers and other amenities, the Town does yearly maintenance to keep the facility running.
About a dozen years ago, there was active discussion about scrapping the building and starting new. But those talks stalled after local leaders decided not to move forward due to a hefty price tag.
Town officials said in recent years, there hasn't been any real talk about renovating or replacing the concession stand. That's largely because the high cost of a new building, the limited period it would be used and fact the beach already draws so well and adding new amenities could overburden the existing operation.
