LOCAL, STATE RACES START FILLING IN

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (JUNE 28, 2022) – Day Two of candidacy declarations for local and state  offices brought more filings Tuesday.

On the second day candidates for Town Council, School Committee and the General Assembly could formally announce their intentions to seek elected office, several joined the fray.

On the Town Council side, incumbent Council President Paul. M. Rodrigues and Councilwoman Barbara A. VonVillas submitted papers with the Town Clerk’s office. They join incumbent Councilman Christopher Logan, Lawrence Frank and Antone Viveiros, each who’ve already filed papers for one of seven seats.

Gregory M. Huet put his name in the race for School Committee. He is running against incumbents Liana Ferreira-Fenton and Theresa Spengler as well as Wendy E. Heaney for the three open seats on the local school board.

Incumbent State Representative Terri-Denise Cortvriend of Portsmouth announced her plan to run for another term for the District 72 seat.

For the District 74 seat, Alex S. Finkelman of Jamestown announced his candidacy for the position now held by State Representative Deborah Ruggiero. Previously, Ruggiero said she planned on running for lieutenant governor.

On Monday, State Senator Louis P. DiPalma submitted his papers seeking another term as the District 12 state senator for Middletown and Little Compton.

To declare for local and state offices, eligible candidates must fill out a “Declaration of Candidacy” form and return it to the Town Clerk’s office in Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road no later than Wednesday, June 29 at 4 pm.

The one-page document includes questions like the candidate’s name, address, length of residence in Rhode Island and Middletown as well as the office being sought.

It is available at the Town Clerk’s office during normal business hours and https://mdl.town/DeclarationOfCandidacy online.

That paperwork cannot be emailed or faxed. Rather, state election information indicated it must be hand delivered or mailed to the Town Clerk’s office with an original signature.

For information about whether you’re eligible to run for office and other election questions, please visit the Secretary of State’s website at https://vote.sos.ri.gov online.
