MIDDLETOWN MEETING MATTERS

MIDDLETOWN TOWN COUNCIL

When: Monday night.

Where: Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road.

Absent: None.

Of note:

  • Applauded the town’s Finance Office for its work to eliminate the School Department’s  Fiscal 2022 deficit and creating a modest surplus in the education books of about $64,000. Council President Paul M. Rodrigues said it was good to see the school’s finances back on track and the town continue to fund its pension and other retiree benefits.
  • Signed off on modest increases to the town’s solid waste and recycling services agreement, which could result in costs for the “Pay-As-You-Throw” curbside collection program. Local leaders said the new rates would be set as part of the upcoming Fiscal 2024 budget.
  • Voted unanimously to form a Comprehensive Plan Update Committee at the request of the town’s Planning Board. Spots on the committee will be advertised in coming days for residents to serve on the volunteer group.
  • Named Emily Buck, Lauren Freitas, Pat Grimes, Glenna Johnson, Peter Midgley and Gabrielle Yoes-Favrot to the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee. The volunteer board was created at the urging of Councilwoman Emily Tessier.
  • Approved a license for Island Cinemas 10 to serve liquor at the movie theater at 866 West Main Road. There was no comment on the request from anyone in the audience or online.
  • Okayed a special event permit for a “Cub Scouts Pack 77 Free Cycle Yard Sale” on Saturday, April 22 from 7:30 am - 12:30 pm at the Middletown Public Library, 700 West Main Road.
  • Heard a request from resident Antone Viveiros to have cameras installed at strategic locations across the community to serve as a deterrent for people running red lights. “It’s getting worse, it’s not getting any better,” Viveiros said.

Next meeting: Monday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m. in Town Hall.
