School may be out for summer, but there was plenty of activity Friday at the Gaudet Athletic Complex. A work team was busy taking out dozens of rolls of the old artificial surface with a reach forklift and grading the field in preparation for the anticipated Aug. 9 reopening of the Turner Road facility. The work was being done to no cost to the Town of Middletown thanks to an ongoing agreement with Salve Regina University in Newport. Laborers said each of the large rolls of old FieldTurf weighed at least 4,000 pounds. All the material would be recycled and turned into new artificial turf.
