STUDENT OF THE WEEK:
MIDDLETOWN HIGH SCHOOL ELEVENTH GRADER SONAM NGAMDUNG
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (JUNE 28, 2024) – In each of the schools across Middletown, there are students doing excellent, noteworthy things. As part of a feature from the town, a different student will be spotlighted for their efforts to make Middletown a special place to live, work and play.
Name: Sonam Ngamdung
School: Middletown High School
Grade: Eleventh
Parent(s)/Guardian(s): Kunsang & Tsering Ngamdung
Accomplishment(s): “Sonam was chosen as one of four delegates to represent New England at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women,” Guidance Counselor Alexandra Mignanelli said. “Since then, she has had the opportunity to speak publicly with Governor McKee, and interview with Mario Hilario on NBC 10, to discuss her work and her experience as a delegate. Sonam is a hard working, straight A student, who truly cares about our community and making a difference in the world.”
Quotable: “Someday we’ll all be free,” Donny Hathaway.
Dream Job: “My dream job is to become a pathologist, as I have an interest in the medical field.”
Favorite Meal: “My favorite meal is probably my grandmother's rice and chicken.”
Go To Snack: “My go-to snack varies depending on how I feel, but lately it's sunflower seeds or a banana.”
Person I Look Up To: “I look up to all Tibetans who have sacrificed their safety to fight for Tibetan independence and rights. Whether in 1959 or today where the Chinese government increases restrictions on Tibetans, people continue to speak up. Even recently in Dege County, hundreds of Tibetans protested the creation of a dam that would displace thousands. Even knowing the pattern of unfair imprisonment and treatment that would and did occur, they still did what they had to do.”
Person I’d Like To Meet: “I would like to meet Blackpink, as they have been my idols since I was around 12 years old. I derive an inexplicable sense of inspiration and motivation from them.”
Top Show Or Movie: “My top show is probably Fairytail, it's been a favorite since I was young.”
Best Local Hangout: “For me personally, the best local hangout with friends is probably the Middletown Public Library where we can study and quietly talk together.”
Music With The Most: "My favorite artist is Tatsuro Yamashita, my favorite of his songs being Merry Go Round, Love Space, Funky Flushin’ and Windy Lady. However, I love R&B, pop, soul, kpop, jpop and hip hop in terms of genres in general.”
Recommended Reading: “I am currently reading The Street by Ann Petry, which is a view into the life and social injustices faced by Lutie Johnson, a single mother Black mother in 1940's Harlem. It is very vulnerable and honest with its portrayal of Lutie's struggles.”
Best Subject In School: “I have always loved English, due to the creativity it allows, whether through narrative writing or analytical essays.”
Teacher/Staff Member I’d Like To Thank: “I would like to thank Ms. Mignanelli, for not just nominating me for Student of the Week, but also for your support throughout the time you have been my guidance counselor. No matter the venture, whether it be taking pre-calculus at CCRI or going to the UN Commission on the Status of Women as a youth delegate you have always helped me, and I really appreciate all you have done.”
Comment From Teacher/Staff Member: “Not only is she academically gifted, but Sonam is also civically and globally aware of current issues that need attention in our ever changing world,” Mignanelli said.
