BEACH INPUT SOUGHT

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (AUGUST 5, 2021)  The Town of Middletown wants to hear from patrons of Second and Third beaches.

In an attempt to provide the best experience possible, the Town has a free survey available on its website for customers and visitors to complete.

Available at https://mdl.town/BeachSurvey, the five-question survey should take no more than a couple of minutes to finish.

“We believe we have the best beaches around, but that doesn’t mean we can’t try to do better,” said Will Cronin, the town’s Operations & Facility Manager who oversees the beaches. “The survey is one tool in the toolbox to let us know how we’re doing, where things are working and where we might be able to do better.”

Every summer, thousands of people visit Second and Third beaches on nice days to enjoy the sun, surf and scenic vistas. Over the years, the Town has made a concerted effort to keep the beaches as natural and under commercialized as possible, a strategy that seems to be paying off.

Quietly, the Town works very hard to keep its beaches as inviting and family friendly as possible. This includes everything from grooming and cleaning them each morning to hiring the best staff to make every beach day special.

This is true, be it for lifelong residents or out-of-town visitors who’ve never experienced the beaches before. Towards that end, the Town regularly reviews the operation of the beaches, a process overseen by the volunteer Beach Commission.

To provide a better experience, this season the Town worked hard to improve the communication surrounding the beaches, whether online, in person or through social media. Part of this was the creation of a “Beach Basics” page online -- https://mdl.town/BeachBasics -- where all the information about the beaches is posted in one easily accessible location.

Hearing from patrons, the Town also pledged to step up its enforcement of the “No Dogs” on the beaches rule during the summer months, except from 5-7:45 a.m. The Town also has been consistent with other messaging like urging patrons to carry out from the beaches what they carry in, among other ideas.

The survey – known as the “Sachuest Beach – Patron Satisfaction Survey” – is part of that outreach. In it, beachgoers are asked the following five questions:

  • The date and time of their visit?
  • Which section of the beach was visited?
  • What the Town can do to improve the Sachuest Beach experience?
  • Any additional comments?
  • Contact information if the patron was looking for follow up from the Town?

“We know everyone has any number of options about how to spend their free time, but they choose Second Beach,” Cronin said. “That’s something we take very seriously, and we’re committed to offering the best experience possible.”
