- Unanimously signed off on moving forward with “Scheme B” to build and sell 36 affordable housing units at 361-393 East Main Road. Affordable housing consultant Frank Spinella said now that the council has signed off on “Scheme B,” the “real work” begins. This includes engineering and in depth designs then pursuing the proper permissions through the town’s review process while seeking state funding to help fund the work. Spinella said the units were projected to sell at $325,000 to $425,000, would be deed restricted and couldn’t be flipped. - Approved a number of Recommendation To Award proposals for the Middletown Middle High School for elevators, fire suppression, plumbing and other services connected to the new building at 1225 Aquidneck Ave. A groundbreaking celebration for the school is planned for June 9 at 10 am on the Turner Road side of Gaudet Middle School.
- Received a check-in report from the Tax Exploration Committee Chair Don Morin about the volunteer group’s work to date. Morin said there was more to do and committee had come up with some interesting results that it continues to work on moving forward.
- Okayed a special-use permit for Newport Sauna to use the parking lots at Second and Third beaches in the off season one or two days a week. Town officials said they’ve heard good things about the operation and no issues had been reported.
- Reserved July 7 and Aug. 4 for the council’s summer meeting schedule. Council President Paul M. Rodrigues said if necessary, the council could schedule special meetings over the summer if necessary.
