This week’s “Where Am I?” seemed to stump readers.
The clue for the photo showing a scenic vista with a couple cars in the background was “I used to be a big deal, but today I’m overlooked, even in this fitness crazed world.”
This description was for the walking and running track just north of the former Kennedy School, a place that thousands drive by every day, but is rarely used anymore.
Located directly across West Main Road from the Town Fair Tire shop, the narrow asphalt track remains in good shape even though it’s at least 20 years old.
Superintendent of Schools Rosemarie K. Kraeger said based on her recollection, the track project was funded at the time by the Kennedy School Parent Teacher Group. It was seen as a way to help get students – and staff – outside to walk and run during recess and physical education classes. Kraeger said Catherine Earhart was principal of Kennedy when the track was installed.
“When it was first put in and over the years, it was very popular,” Kraeger said. “It was a real asset to the school and a great way to get students outside and enjoying their surroundings.”
The Kennedy School was closed in 2009 to help save money and offer local students a better educational experience. More recently, the building has been used by a variety of organizations needing classroom or related space.
Long term, the parcel is part of a plan to remake the area in the heart of town. Currently, town staff is going through three Requests for Information submitted for the property, but no finalists have been named yet.
