MIDDLETOWN MEETING MATTERS
Middletown Town Council
When: Monday night.
Where: Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road.
Absent: None.
Of note, the council:
- Heard a presentation from Portsmouth Eagle Scout Sean VonVillas about his work to restore the historic cemetery No. 28 on Valley Road near the John Clarke Retirement Center. VonVillas, the grandson of Councilwoman Barbara A. VonVillas, thanked a group of his friends, Home Depot, J&J Materials and U-Haul for their support during the project, which shed new light on the historic cemetery. “You did a fantastic job down there,” Councilwoman M. Theresa Santos said. “You cleaned up the whole cemetery.”
- Asked Town Administrator Shawn J. Brown to review all fees within the Town’s ordinances to see how they stack up compared to other communities to see if changes were needed. The proposal was suggested by Councilman Dennis Turano, who said it might be an opportunity to generate new revenues for the community.
- Discussed the need for people to be respectful when visiting the Town’s Four Corners Cemetery with their dogs. A resident asked that dogs be banned from the cemetery because of issues they can cause, but council members said they wanted to get more information before making any changes, if necessary.
- Opted to keep Third Beach parking as resident only after a Newport resident asked for a spot. Council President Paul M. Rodrigues said while some out of towners weren’t thrilled with the decision, he’s heard nothing but positive feedback from locals getting Third Beach back and not having to wait in lines.
Next meeting: Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. from Town Hall.
