The #MiddletownRI Town Council holds its second regular meeting in September and hears updates about the new middle-high school, library and other efforts across the community.
MIDDLETOWN MEETING MATTERS
MIDDLETOWN TOWN COUNCIL
When: Monday night, Sept. 15, 2025
Where: Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road
Absent: None
Of Note:
- Held a moment of silence for Keydell Fuller Miller at the request of Councilor Charlie Roberts. Speaking about Fuller Miller, Roberts said he was a great young man who went out of his way to make everyone comfortable and happy. Roberts said a “Kick For Keydell” soccer event is planned for Sept. 28 from 9 am-noon at the Gaudet Middle School turf field.
- Signed off on a plan to borrow up to $11.4 million for renovations to the new Middletown Public Library at 110 Enterprise Center, a sum that includes all costs and interest. About $4.4 million of that total will be reimbursed by the state and the remainder covered through money the town receives to provide emergency services to Coddington Cove and Greene Lane neighborhoods. Town Administrator Shawn J. Brown said as originally promised, the project would not cost residents a dime in new tax money.
- Heard two new Fire Department engines are expected to be delivered within the next month or two, with two new ambulances on order, with delivery slated for early 2027.
- Approved making Sept. 20 as James “Jim” Culipher Day at the request of council President Paul M. Rodrigues, who said Culipher was the Knights of Columbus “Knight of the Year” and had done quite a bit for the community.
- Okayed recommendations to award for final clearing, demolition and abatement and signage work for the new Middletown Middle-High School project, which remains firmly “on time and on budget.”
- Agreed to have Town Solicitor Peter B. Regan look into the town’s short-term rental ordinances to make sure some owner occupied facilities aren’t penalized and make suggested changes to go before the council for review. The item was before the council at the request of Councilor Dennis Turano.
Next Meeting: Monday, Oct. 6 at 6:30 pm in Town Hall.
