The deck at the Second Beach pavilion is going to be expanded about 700 square feet, thanks to a project from the #MiddletownRI Beach Commission. The work is expected to be done before Summer 2026, providing more room for fun and good times.
BEACH PAVILION UPGRADES PLANNED
MIDDLETOWN, RI (SEPTEMBER 23, 2025) – Middletown is looking to make the Summer 2026 beach experience even better.
Recently, the town put out bids to do an expansion to the pavilion deck at the concession stand building at 315 Sachuest Point Road.
As part of the work, the existing deck will be removed and a new, larger one installed in its place.
There’s a mandatory pre-bid conference for the project on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 10 am in the upstairs conference room of Town Hall. Sealed bids are due on Oct. 8 at 10 am in Town Hall.
Money for the project will come from the town’s Beach Fund, finances that’s dedicated solely for beach improvements.
Will Cronin, who oversees the beaches as part of his duties with the town, said the project would be completed well before the start of the beach season on Memorial Day weekend 2026.
“This was a project the Beach Commission identified to help improve the overall experience at the beach,” Cronin said. “The deck we have now can tend to get crowded and doesn’t have enough space to serve all the needs. I know it’s something we’re all looking forward to coming together. This idea originated from the Beach Commission and certainly has seen the strong support and backing of the group.”
While an official report on the numbers from Summer 2025 hasn’t been released yet, Cronin reported it was strong throughout.
From start to finish, he said the weather was amazing, Second Beach was in great shape and there were no closures, minus two days for the impacts of Hurricane Erin.
Cronin said the new deck would add about 700 square feet to the western side of the pavilion building.
It would be made of wood and concrete and designed to last in the harsh sandy, salty conditions.
The designs and layout for the new decking were done by Crossman Engineering of Warwick.

“Every year, we’re working to improve what we offer at Second and Third beaches,” Cronin said. “We feel this will be an important addition and one that will be welcomed next summer.”
